Interpretive Storytelling for Trails, Public and Exhibits
I am a Canadian writer specializing in science, environmental, and outdoor adventure. Over the past 20 years I've worked with magazines and newspapers, corporations, government agencies and non-profits from across Canada and the United States as a journalist and professional writer. My writing craft is enhanced by my broader experience as a post-secondary outdoor educator and professional canoe, sea kayak and nature guide.
As a creative content project manager, I assemble and collaborate with a team of professional graphic designers, artists and illustrators, photographers, digital cartographers and subject experts to plan and develop interpretive signs, exhibits and publications from start to finish.
My writing is active, lean and authoritative. I have a background in environmental science, extensive experience working in the adventure travel industry, and honed my skills in fast-paced news and magazine journalism. Clients rely on my efficiency, attention to detail, leadership and team-working skills to tell the stories that matter in meaningful ways.
Clients include Destination Ontario, Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, Evolugen by Brookfield Renewable, Wildlands League, The New Business, Trans-Canada Trail, Naturally Superior Adventures and others.
It's my job as a professional communicator to match the message to the target audience. I have worked on projects that braid Indigenous Knowledge and Western Science to help establish a new Marine Protected Area in northern Canada; distill technical reports and interviews for a general audience; and create exciting, informative and search engine optimized content to support tourism partners.
News, features and service journalism is the foundation of my writing craft. My stories about the science and the environment, outdoor adventure and lifestyle have been nominated for multiple Canadian National Magazine Awards, winning gold in 2012. I've also earned two Northern Lights Awards for Travel Writing Excellence and was recognized by the Ontario Tourism Summit for Travel Writing. In print or online, I produce clean, accurate, well-researched stories ranging from investigative reporting, travel narratives, personal essays, profiles, how-tos and gear reviews.
Clients include SIERRA, Cottage Life, Reader's Digest, The Walrus, ON Nature, Explore, Canoe & Kayak, Canadian Geographic, the Globe and Mail, Paddling Magazine, Mensjournal.com and more.
Planning, researching, writing and assembling teams of collaborators to develop interpretive signs, exhibits and publications was a logical next step in my career as a journalist and professional writer. I offer a la carte project management services, including research and planning, writing, graphic design, photography (stock and custom), original illustrations, digital mapmaking and more. My experience is rooted in environmental science, ecology, human history and outdoor adventure: I specialize in making meaningful and relevant connections between nature, flora and fauna, tourism opportunities and cultural attractions with a wide range of audiences.
I work with government agencies and non-profits to develop interpretive trail signs, diorama exhibits, direct-mail publications and books—each designed achieve specific goals and capture the imagination of a variety of audiences. Clients include the National Capital Commission, Central Algoma Freshwater Coalition, Algoma Tourism, the Soo Pee Wee Arena Association and others.
Great storytelling is just the beginning when it comes to designing and producing signs, exhibits and publications that resonate with audiences. My writing is even more powerful when it's part of a creative vision that's supported by professional graphic design, translation, art and cartography—and shared in attention-grabbing media.
